Birthplace of Route 66 Park / Landmark in Missouri
The Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park celebrates the history of the iconic Mother Road, the idea for which was born just blocks away at the Colonial Hotel. Springfield businessman John T. Woodruff along with Cyrus Avery in Oklahoma proposed in 1926 the idea for the highway connecting Chicago to Los Angeles. At a 1927 meeting in Tulsa, Woodruff was elected the first president of the Route 66 Association.
