Funks Grove / Attraction in Illinois
A highlight of a visit to Funks Grove is the Sugar Grove Nature Center. More than 1,000 acres of woodland and the largest remaining prairie grove in the state of Illinois make this a wonderful oasis. It is designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. In addition to interpretive kiosks, miles of trails and photogenic buildings including a long abandoned store and a depot, there is an historic cemetery that dates to 1830 and a church built in 1864. On April 28, 2000, with funds from Irish heritage groups, a monument was added to the cemetery to commemorate the Irish immigrants interred here after dying during construction of the Chicago & Alton Railroad in the 1850s.
