Giant Hamburg / Attraction in Missouri
Sheldon Chaney (May 20, 1916 – June 2, 1997) arrived in Springfield after World War II. He purchased a small Sinclair gas station on Route 66 with several wooden, motor court cabins tucked among the trees on the back of the property. A café was added in 1947. He and his wife also established a small ranch with a herd of beef cattle. The café was expanded and hamburgers using the beef they raised became a staple menu item. It remained in operation until 1984. In 2013, a fundraising campaign was established to recreate the unique Red's Giant Hamburg sign.
