Old Chain of Rocks Bridge / Attraction in Illinois
Built in 1929 as a St. Louis bypass toll bridge, this cantilever through truss bridge across the Mississippi River is 5,353 feet long with a 22 degree bend at the middle. In 1936 it became U.S. Alt, a St Louis detour. With completion of the I270 bridge in 1967, the Chain of Rocks Bridge was closed. The bridge appears in the 1981 movie Escape From New York starring Kurt Russell. In 1998 Trailnet leased the bridge and renovated it for use by bicycles and pedestrians.
