Pecos National Historical Park / Attraction in New Mexico
Preserved at this scenic location are towering ruins (some five stories in height) of a vast pueblo complex that predates the arrival of Spanish explorers in 1540. Archeological evidence indicates that settlement at the site dates to about 800 A.D. Estimates are that the population at its peak around 1400 was about 2,000 people. The pueblo was the hub of a vast trading network. The legendary Santa Fe Trail opened in 1821 after Mexico won its independence from Spain passed through the park.
