Spencer’s Gas Station / Attraction in Missouri
The town of Spencer dates to establishment of Johnson's Mill on Turnback Creek in about 1866. A post office was established in 1868. The town was named for the owner of the Spencer General Store. By the late teens it was a ghost town. In 1925, Spencer purchased the town site that included the vacant general store. A cafe, garage, service station and store were built on the site to capitalize on Route 66 traffic. Realignment of the highway resulted in closure. In 2011 the Francis Ryan family acquired the site and renovated the structures as a photo op.
