Stony Dell Resort

Built by George Prewett in 1932 on the site of a campground on the Cherokee Trail of Tears, the Stonydell complex consisted of a hotel, restaurant, cabins, large fish pond, and huge 100-foot swimming pool. Built using locally quarried stone, the resort was a destination for people who lived as far away as Kansas City, and a favored stop for Route 66 travelers. To capitalize on the resorts popularity a number of stores, restaurants, and cabin complexes opened along the highway. In 1967 the construction of I44 led to the razing of much of the complex.
