The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery / Restaurant in Texas
The original Big Texan established by R. J. "Bob" Lee opened on Route 66 in 1960. He had designed the restaurant to capture the romanticized feel of the Old West and provide unique ambiance for people enjoying a steak dinner. He commissioned a towering illuminated sign that featured a cowboy with hat pushed back on his head. Posted along Route 66 in both directions were billboards with a picture of the sign that proclaimed free 72 ounce steak. With bypass of Route 66 by I40 the restaurant was relocated to its current location.
