Continued from Lexington.

Continue on Old Highway 66.

Historic bridge

Towanda

As Old Route 66 peels away from the railroad, at the intersection with Jackson St. intersection, you have a choice:

Old gas station converted to bar

1926-1945 post 1946

Recommended

Turn left onto Jackson St.

Follow as Jackson veers westbound away from the railroad.

As Jackson St. meets up with the former 4-lane alignment, we’re forced to leave the 1926 alignment.

Follow Jackson St. as it curves on the inside of the 4-lane alignment.

Right (=north) onto Jefferson St.

Immediate next is the intersection of the 4 lane alignment and Jefferson St. (new choice of routes).

The former 4-lane alignment continues.

Continue straight on Old Route 66.

At the stop sign at the Jefferson St intersection, you have a choice:

1926-1945 post 1946 To the Veterans Pkwy. bypass

The original alignment is chopped up in pieces, requiring connecting other roads to be used.

Continue north on Jefferson St. (connecting).

Left (=west) on Jackson St. (1926 alignment).

Jackson to the right is also the 1926 alignment, but it deadends onto the 1946 alignment.

Curve left onto Quincy St. (1926 alignment)

Dead Man’s Curve

Stay with Quincy St. as it veers right to avoid the 1946 alignment. (connecting).

Right ons the former 4-lane alignment.

If you do not drive a long vehicle and do not mind dead-ends:

Go straight acrosse the 1946 former 4 lane alignment instead of turing right.

At the next intersection (Monroe St and Quincy St.), both north and south Quincy St. deadend and both are the 1926 alignment. Take care with the southern deadend, it becomes private property.

Return to the 4-lane alignment and head southwest.

The former 4 lane highway bypassing Towanda has been reduced back to 2 lanes, the older set of lanes is used for the Geographic Journey.

Continue southwest on Old Route 66.

Route 66 – A geographic Journey

Warning: The exit complex you need was being worked on in 2006 and had the exit blocked off.

This isn’t an actual Route 66 alignment in Towanda, but used to reach Veterans Pkwy. in Normal/Bloomington (a 1940 alignment)

Continue north on Jefferson St.

Continue straight onto 1900 E Rd. at the intersection with Jackson St.

Enter I-55 westbound till exit 167.

Continue to Normal/Bloomington.

Continue southwest on Old Route 66.
